Do they have any of those naked wood furniture stores in your area? The ones in my area all have furniture which is made in the US. The stuff is a bit expensive, but it's usually good, solid wood, and if this is her first baby, it will last her through her others, as well.

To save a bit on the cost, you could paint, stain, or otherwise finish it yourself. When I was looking at dressers at a store near us, they lady told me that if I was willing to do a bit of work, it would significantly cut the cost of my furniture, and she said that she buys from the store, but does all the finishing herself. You could just go to Home Depot and buy a can of stain and do it yourself, and I am sure it would look absolutely beautiful, or you could get creative and use colored paint.

I wish I had another suggestion for a crib that isn't expensive, but if you want something made in the US, and you want something which won't fall apart, you may need to pay a bit more.

And you are a sweet friend to get such a large gift for your friend. She's lucky to have you ;)
References :
I'm partial to Amish made things ( I own an Amish furniture store), but you may look at an Amish furniture store..everything we have in our store is made in Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio..NOT china! and that is awesome we have sold a lot of Amish toys, because they are American made..I have an Amish crib for my youngest step son (well..I did he's 4 now so he's a little big for it now!!..lol), but that would be my recommendation it may be a little more expensive, but at least you'd be sure that your baby is safe! good luck!! and have a happy new year!
References :
own an amish furniture store all american made!!!

if you look for Amish furniture, not only is it made in the USA, but the materials are all natural, and the workmanship is very sturdy - they do it the old way - not the quick assemly line crap material shortcut way!!

here's some:

You get your husband to make you a crib.
Or you get a carpenter to make you one.
It's not that expensive.
References :
Just received my new baby crib from a local carpenter.

Good luck finding anything that is not made in China!! For some reason, people do not care like they should about our own country!! I wish people would wake up and realize that our economy is suffering because we are giving everything to China and many other places... then being upset when there is lead in these items. Too bad we cannot all ban together and only buy American and Canadian made items. Good luck!!
References :
Looking for an American crib, too... and everything else for the baby!!

Just because something is sold by Ikea doesn't mean it isn't made in China:

http://www.ikea.com.sg/faqs/faqs.asp#1faq9
"Because IKEA products are manufactured throughout the world, there are sometimes circumstances which can cause delivery delays."

You should know that even if a product says it is made in some country other than China it is likely that some of the parts were made in China. If assembly is the biggest expense in making a product and it is assembled in the US it can carry a made in the US sticker. Wherever the most money is put into the production that's where the product is "made".

You may have to look for something hand crafted.
References :
Ikea. Their cribs aren't that fancy though and I think they only have about 2. But they're definitely not made in China.

Mystic has a point...the parts might be shipped from China. However, if you're concerned about lead paint, Ikea makes cribs without any paint on them.
