There are so many options available and many more questions to ask yourself. Consider the following:

1) Will the baby carrier be shared?
2) How old is your baby?
3) How much effort will you put into using the baby carrier?
4) How many carrying positions do you want?
5) Will you be nursing using your carrier?
6) What kind of support do you need? (A one shouldered carry is fine with young babies, but older heavy babies are best carried with a two shouldered carrier such as a soft pack carrier or mei tai.)

I have used many different baby carriers as my daughter grew. But if I had to pick just one it would be the Ergo Baby Carrier. It can be used from birth (with the infant insert) to 40 lbs. Check out La Stella Blu where you can easily find information on the different types of baby carriers and find great deals in their outlet too.
References :
http://www.lastellablu.com

My favorite carriers for wearing for long amounts of times are wraps. I have a Gypsy Mama Bali Baby stretch I love, and a thicker woven Storchenweige that is awesome too. Other favorites of mamas are Mobys (I have one, but love my GM, which is similar in stretch), Ellaroo, Baby K'tan. The wraps are great for any age and for back carries, which is neccessary if you are cleaning house.

I also love my Baby Hawk Mei Tai for older age kiddos (6 mo and up). They are super easy to put on, and can be worn on front and back as well. Some other good MT's are Kozy carriers, freehand baby, ergo.

Pouch carriers are awesome for quick trips, not the best for walks or house cleaning, but my favorites are Peanut Shell, hotsling, lucky baby, and my handmade fleece ones (styled after the peanut shell fleece)
I would pass on the bjorn style, as you can't do back carries and the weight limit is way lower than other style carriers.
References :
http://www.gypsymama.com

I have both... a Moby Wrap and an Infantino Style Rider.
Both have their pros. With the Moby Wrap, you can use it in a bunch of different ways- you can wrap it so the baby can ride on your back, you can wrap it for breastfeeding, you can wrap it for twins, you can have them ride forward or backward facing you and so on. There's like 10 different ways or more, that you can use it.

I like the support of the Infantino. I use that when I go out shopping, and the Moby while I'm at home.
References :
We use a Baby Bjorn, the white breathable fabric one. It's pretty hot where we are and I've found this one to be great. Our daughter weighs about 6 kilos and she still faces me. The bjorn has this back support thing and yeah, I like it :-) I use it every day, it's especially great for supermarket shopping.

I haven't tried any other by the way. I haven't needed to yet.
References :
infantino -- if you like the carriers that the baby lies down in
baby bjorn -- if you like the style of carriers where the bavby sits in a more upright position
