I make and sell baby carriers?
Hey everyone! I handmake baby carriers and sell them locally and online, i do custom and premade orders, and i would just LOVE if you could give me your opinions on sling style baby carriers, mei tai style carriers, and your favorite fabric patterns and prints.
I will choose a best answer =]
THE absolute best wrap ever for me (i’m short and dumpy) is the one at http://www.mamankangourou.ca
the wide coverage down both arms means zero stress on the shoulders and neck and because it is infinitly adjustable, there’s zero stress on the back if you’ve done it right.
very simple to make: it’s 16ft of 22" wide fabric.
mine was jersey - t-shirt fabric - and while that was superb when she was wee, it’s no good now that she’s whoa.
i don’t know anything about fabric but if i could, i’d get one in maybe a silk - i’ve been told that silk has very high tensile strength while still having a bit of give and breathability for comfort.
i’d have it reversible: dark one side, very light the other - on cold days, i’d wear it dark side out so it would help keep baby warm. on hot days, i’d wear it light side out to repel the heat from the sun’s rays.
and definitey pockets - not just one huge open pound, either: one largish pouch for things like my wallet, with a closure easy to operate one-handed. then a bunch of smaller pouches for cell phone, TTC tickets, house keys, and the other little things you need to grab. having a lot of smaller pockets would reduce the blind fumbling through pocket and purse.
hmmmm… what else would be cool would be a section that’s made of the same stuff the uber-muslim women wear over their eyes: that way, the baby can see out but be more or less protected from the sun and prying ppl. also better air circulation.

awwwww….
i used the sling style ones with my son. he loved them, and i did too.
for patterns, how about personalized ones? like where you put the baby’s name or initials, and birth statistics, and in colors like blue, green, black for boys and pink, red, yellow and purple for girls.
that would be really cute!

I love BabyHawk Mei Tais and Zolowear slings. I like funky patterns in nice soft materials.
On another topic - I hope you set this business up as a proper business, with insurance. Should a baby be hurt while using one of your carriers, you will be sued - You need to protect you and your family from losing everything. So many WAHMs don’t spend the money to get good legal advice and insurance. Ring slings are especially notorious for asphyxiation of young babies if used improperly. That being said, I could not live without my ring sling!

I love the moby and I’m kind of boring in that I like basic black as it goes with everything. I wish it came in two lengths though…I’m plus sized so it would be nice if it were a bit longer so I could tie it in the front instead of the back, where it pokes me every time I sit down.

I make my own carriers too, and here are some things I like
favorites for pouches: fleece or stretch cotton fabric, as I like the hug factor of a slightly stretchy pouch. I love having a pocket and a toy ring, also padded legs are nice, but not neccessary on fleece as it’s soft and cozy already.
Mei Tais: good padding in the shoulder straps, padded waist is not really neccessary for me. Like the reversible option, and possibly an elasticized pocket (although none of mine have pockets on them lol). Love babyhawk and freehand baby mei tais, as they are unique and fun.
Can’t give you an opinion on ring slings- not my favorite
I like bright prints, and sophisticated patterns.
