Baby Crib Safety
When placing value upon a baby's furniture you can be sure
that aside from the baby changer the next piece of furniture of
importance is the crib itself. This item involves one of the
major expenditures that most new parent spends when they have a
new born baby. Apart from its beauty and the ability to blend
into the natural surroundings of the baby's room foremost
consideration should be extended to the safety that would be
provided by the crib and the frame. These safety factors are
often considered to be a major consideration when purchasing a
new crib.
SID or sudden infant death is a widely discussed subject in
cases where the crib may possibly be the primary cause of the
fatality. In view of these facts the United States government
has released specific standards necessary for compliance in the
manufacturing cribs since the year 1973. These legislative
goals were established to ensure that crib manufacturing
companies and individuals who offer cribs for sale in the
marketplace only present products which pass or exceed these
set standards.
Even though we currently have a law such as this to ensure
the safety involved in all the baby products on the market it
is still up to the parents to exercise the necessary care
needed when selecting and purchasing a crib. After all this,
the fact still remains that we are talking here about the
safety of our own helpless babies. Most parents would readily
agree that their child is irreplaceable and any actions that
can be taken towards protecting the baby are well worth it.
One of the foremost rules that should be followed when you
are looking towards the purchase of a new baby crib is that the
mattress has a very snug fit. Mattresses which do not adhere to
this rule and do not fit properly may cause the baby to
accidently go under it and ultimately to cause suffocation in
the infant. Another important item relating to the mattress is
the amount of firmness which it displays. A very soft feeling
mattress once again can possibly cause infant suffocation since
the face of the young baby would tend to be buried under it.
Finally, the side rails should be given a certain amount of
consideration. Granted, these are important accessories for the
new crib particularly if your child is approaching the age
where they readily play and move about from side to side.
Prevention is oftentimes much better than the alternate
consequences so it is generally best that you provide the
needed precautions against un-necessary injuries and incidents
such as the possibility of suffocation.
